Dear Carmen Arace Middle School Families:

As the proud principal of CAMS, I want to extend a warm welcome to you as we begin a new school year. We are a school community committed to providing a rigorous curriculum in nurturing a shared responsibility to deliver a 21st century education.

Our goal is to provide a safe and affirming environment that closes the academic gap and prepares every student for college and meaningful careers.

I would like to share some exciting news about new initiatives to improve student performance as well as key indicators that we are moving in the right direction academically:

  • Increased resources – 5 new teachers (2) Math, (1) Science, (1) ELA, (1) Social Studies
  • Decreased class sizes -  From more than 20 to 16 students per class
  • Increased instructional time – An additional 35 minutes of instructional time
  • Advanced  and STEM course offerings
  • Partnerships - UCONN Pre-engineering program supports math and science instruction
  • Double digit gains in 7th and 8th grade Math on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) between 2014-2018
  • 7th grade earned double-digit increases in Math and Reading on the 2017 -2018 Smarter Balanced Assessment
  • 64% of our grade 8 students met/exceeded the Evidence-based Reading and Writing (ERW) PSAT benchmark in the spring of 2018; 50% met/exceeded the benchmark for 9th grade. The PSAT is the preliminary test that prepares students for the official SAT when students are juniors. These PSAT scores indicate our students are making academic progress

I am honored to team up with you in this great challenge of educating our young scholars!
